Romantic Gentleman in riding boots
Romantic Gentleman in riding boots
Romantic Period(1820-1850). Some place the Romantic influence on fashion from as early as the 1815 to as late as 1870 which would show variation in styles from decade to decade. Mens shirts had tall standing collars and later turned down collars and they were worn with a cravats. Long pants were usually worn except for formal occasions. Frockcoats, waistcoats, morning coats, tail coats and vest with notch or shawl lapels were worn, with cloaks, overcoats and tall hats for the outdoors. Ladies usually wore high necklines in the day but evening gowns were more liberal on the neckline. Sleeves were “lamb of mutton” or puffy in style and the skirt was full and often made of stiff or heavy and sometimes brocade fabrics with crinolines or long starched petticoats. Gowns had corset tops or were worn with bodices. “Spaniel curls” were worn with usually close to the head style hairdos of braids turned up or knots worn under linen caps nicely or sometimes highly decorated with bows, lace, ribbons or feathers. Fancy hats or especially bonnets were worn outdoors and simple caps for indoors.
